Designer Of The Week: Duro Olowu

Duro Olowu and wife Thelma Golden

Duro Olowu is a genius when it comes to mixing fabrics and textures together. His vibrant prints are captivating and incredible.

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, to a Nigerian father and Jamaican mother, Olowu was raised between Nigeria and London. He was encourage at an early age to sketch. He trained as a lawyer but gave it up to pursue a career in the fashion industry. He launched his first collection in spring of 2004 and received rave reviews from his peers. Winning the coveted " New Designer of the Year" at the British Fashion Awards in 2005 send Duro on his way to a successful fashion career. He married the beautiful Thelma Golden, chief curator of the Studio Museum in Harlem, in 2008.

Duro is known for his beautiful rare vintage printed silk dresses. Besides Marni and Diane von Furstenberg, I haven't seen brilliant use of colors and prints by any other designer. His pieces are truly a fusion of bohemian chic and urban influences.
